Working with celebrities is never a one-size-fits-all experience. With some, you must create an image. Then there are the rare leading ladies like Sharon Stone who have an innate sense of style, which makes my job easy. The difference between working with models and celebrities is this: It's a model's job to be transformed, but a celebrity "owns" her image and has more of an opinion of how she wants to look. I think that her years as a model working with such amazing photographers as Guy Bourdin and Helmut Newton has given Sharon an adventurous side that enables her to maintain her iconic style but still push the envelope. There are few celebs who can successfully wear such a cutting-edge, short hairstyle as she does, and I daresay there are no others who cut their own hair, as she does. It takes a self-confidence that few possess. I did Sharon's makeup for a recent event honoring Richard Gere. I wanted her to be sexy and iconic. I had something in mind, and when we met she almost repeated it verbatim. She comes prepared with an idea of how she wants to look from head-to-toe and uses a cinematic reference. On the makeup front, she's known for her strong eyebrows, so I decided to just groom them and go with a smoky eye lined in black. I added a bronze iridescent powder around the eye and painted the lips with a neutral gloss for a monochromatic look. Needless to say, her look was effortlessly breathtaking. You might say that she has a basic instinct for looking fabulous. |
